X is now testing a free version of its AI chatbot, Grok, a tool previously available only to premium subscribers.
Created by Elon Musk’s AI-focused company, xAI, Grok is designed to assist users by answering questions, providing information, and engaging in interactive conversations.
This testing phase hints at a major shift, potentially opening Grok up to a larger audience and expanding its influence beyond premium users.
Rolling Out Free Access: What’s Happening
In a recent update, app researchers reported that X has enabled free access to Grok for some users in specific regions, with TechCrunch confirming the testing in New Zealand.
If successful, this move could boost user engagement significantly as more people experience Grok’s capabilities.
Grok’s Growing Abilities
Since its launch in August, Grok has undergone significant upgrades.
Enhanced by Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 model, Grok-2 introduced advanced image analysis, letting users interact with images in a whole new way.
By opening access, X aims to showcase these capabilities, setting Grok up as a competitor to top AI models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Google’s Gemini.
Access and Usage Guidelines
While free access opens new doors, current usage limits are in place. Users can access:
- 10 queries per two hours on Grok-2
- 20 queries per two hours on the Grok-2 mini model
- 3 image analysis questions daily
To use Grok for free, accounts must be at least seven days old and linked to a verified phone number.
These restrictions help maintain quality and security as more users try the chatbot.
Expanding Grok’s Reach: What It Means for X and AI
Opening Grok to free users aligns with xAI’s ambition to reach a wider audience and refine its product through user feedback.
X is positioning itself as a competitive force in the AI industry, rivaling established platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
This expanded access to Grok might just be the first step in making X a central player in AI-powered user engagement.
Should this trial succeed, X and xAI could strengthen their positions as leaders in consumer AI, bringing innovative and interactive tools to more users worldwide.
